"Spyware" is a program that is put in your computer to secretly gather information about you and send it to interested parties. This information could pertain to your Internet browsing habits and is sold to advertisers. The information collected could also include passwords, credit card numbers, email addresses or any other information that is in your computer to be used for far more sinister purposes.

The result can be pop-ups on your screen for products that you might have an interest, hijacking of your Internet browser to sites which better server the interests of the advertisers or theft of your identity. These pesky programs steal system resources (processor time and memory) and Internet bandwidth resulting in poorly performing if not unstable computers. They violate your privacy.

How does "Spyware" get in your computer? In many cases we unwittingly invite them. In others they take advantage of security weaknesses in Internet browsers, e-mail programs or instant messaging programs. Some not all freeware programs contain "Spyware". The fact that they are there is buried deep in the fine print of the user licensing agreement you approve before downloading. File sharing programs such as music sharing programs are notorious for this.

"Spyware" to join them. Before you know it your computer has slowed to a snail's pace. You have more pop-ups on your screen then you can close. Furthermore, your browser seems to have a mind of its own.

What can you do to prevent "Spyware"?

  1. Be careful what you download. Not all downloads contain "Spyware". Read the user licensing agreement carefully. This is no guarantee but it is a good start. Only download software from known reputable sites.

  2. Never open e-mail attachments you are not expecting.

  3. Make sure you consistently update your software. Windows security updates are continuously available.

  4. Scan your computer at least weekly for "Spyware". There are several good programs available.
